history painting 0001 is the first issue in a serialized component of a project that shares its name, history painting. In 2012 Manuel Angeja started collecting and reproducing digital reproductions of portraits of historical figures found on the web. He uses the project as a game or machine for studying history, referring to the pictures generated as his collection he forms decks, shuffles and arranges them in various ways hoping to generate further connections and lines of thought.

The pictures included in history painting #1 were chosen from his collection and ordered based on aesthetic decisions as well as current lines of thought.
